Class 11 New Compulsory English Unit 2 Grammar Exercise Position of Adverbs Chapter: ‘Communication’ Freewriting

Comprehension Answer the following questions. (Page-18)

A) Why is freewriting also called ‘automatic writing’?

Ans: Freewriting is also called ‘automatic writing’ because writing process is done without thinking about the outcome of it. It allows a person to produce written words without consciously writing.

B) How do you differentiate writing from speaking?

Ans: A speech is spontaneous whereas writing is planned. Speech uses tone groups, and it can convey only one idea. Writing uses sentences, and a sentence can contain many ideas. Writing has also the advantage of permitting more editing.

C) What is the biggest obstacles in the writing process, according to Elbow? Do you agree with him? Why? Why not?

Ans: A massive and complicated series of editing is the biggest obstacles in the writing process, according to Elbow. Yes, I agree with him because schooling makes us obsessed with the “mistakes” we make in writing. Many people are constantly thinking about spelling and grammar as they try to write.

D) How can freewriting overcome ‘writer’s block’?

Ans: The main thing about freewriting is that it is none-editing. It is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page. It will make writing less blocked because words will come more easily.

E) What do you mean by ‘voice’ in writing?

Ans: ‘Voice’ in writing means natural way of producing words.  It is a sound, a texture and a rhythm.  It is the main source of power in your writing.

F) Elbow uses a simile to explain that freewriting “is like writing something and putting it in a bottle in the sea.” What does this mean? Explain.

Ans: It means that in free writing, we don’t expect response or comments from others about writing. It means that Freewriting helps you by providing no feedback at all.

G) How can freewriting overcome ‘writer’s block’?

Ans: The main thing about freewriting is that it is none-editing. It is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page. It will make writing less blocked because words will come more easily.

Critical thinking

A) How does the author persuade readers in this essay? What is he trying to communicate to the readers?

Ans: The author is encouraging us to begin freewriting by telling us that we don’t need to worry about results. He is persuading us by telling us that  we don’t  need to worry about the formal structures, mechanics or grammar. Freewriting is like brainstorming. It is simply exploring our ideas through writing. When we  freewrite, we write whatever comes into our mind on the topic. We write without stopping. Most of the freewriting exercises are of short duration – around five or ten minutes.

He wants to convey a message to us that freewriting is not a matter of success or failure. We simply explore our mind without considering its outcomes. He convinces us by providing simile, comparison and examples etc. He tells that it is like writing something and putting it in a bottle in the sea.” It means that in free writing, we don’t expect response or comments from others about writing. It means that Freewriting helps you by providing no feedback at all.

A massive and complicated series of editing is the biggest obstacles in the writing process. He tells that schooling makes us obsessed with the “mistakes” we make in writing. Many people are constantly thinking about spelling and grammar as they try to write. But we don’t need to worry about these problems in freewriting.

B) Elbow said, freewriting “is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page.” Do you agree with his statement? Why? Why not?

Ans: Yes, I agree with the Elbow’s statement that freewriting “is an exercise in bringing together the process of producing words and putting them down on the page. The main thing about freewriting is that it is none-editing. It will make writing less blocked because words will come more easily.

Freewriting is like our hidden voice that comes naturally when we begin it. We start to produce words in a natural way.  It is a sound, a texture and a rhythm.  It is the main source of power in our writing.

A massive and complicated series of editing is the biggest obstacles in the writing process, according to Elbow. So, he requests us to start freewriting without considering its outcome. We just produce words and write down on the page. When we forget about editing, our freewriting becomes smooth. It helps us next time when we start freewriting.

C) How did you learn to write? What was particularly difficult in writing? What inspired you to write? What are some of the challenges that you still face while writing?

Ans: I learn to write by practicing freewriting on different topics. The most difficult thing in writing is to start writing. I feel difficulties at the beginning. I was inspired by English teacher who taught me about freewriting and its advantages.

While being a writer has major advantages, it also has its own challenges. Some challenges can drain the life out of us. Some of the challenges that I still face while writing are:

  • Grammatical errors
  • Spelling Errors
  • Lack of Ideas : You’re very sure you can write that article, but you don’t have ideas or points to write on.
  • Dealing with the writer’s block: This is what you feel when you find it difficult to write. You just don’t know what to write.
  • Not feeling creative enough.
  • Being isolated frequently.
  • Not being productive enough.

A) Write a paragraph on any one of the following topics.

  1. My school library
  2. Moral values I like most

A) Essay on My School Library:

Books play an important and vital role in everyone’s life. It expands our thinking process. It helps us to know  more about life around us.. A library is a place where we can read books on different topics. My school library is the best place for me because I enjoy reading fictional books. It takes me to imaginative world of dreams. I always go to my school library in a leisure period.

My school has one of the best libraries in my municipality. It has  three large rooms. It is airy and well maintained. Our librarian is Mr Sujit Devkota. There are the books of general interest, daily newspapers, journals and reference and other text books. Our library has nearly 30,000 books.

My school library contains books on various themes, genres, and subjects. Our principal sir advised us to choose a book according to our interest.  We can borrow books from our school library and when we finish reading it, we return it in time.

The library is one of the most important places of my school. I think that our government should establish library in every government school. It should contain all varieties of books. It can be used by students and teachers alike. It is a storehouse of knowledge. So, I think school library is my best to spend my time.
