Comprehension
Answer the following questions.
a) Why didn’t the mother recognize her son Gopi?
Answer: She doesn’t recognize anybody because of her old age. She had lost her memory power.
b) Why is the sister living with her mother?
Answer: The sister is living with her mother because her brother doesn’t live with his mother to take care of her.
c) What is the sister’s attitude towards her brother?
Answer: She doesn’t like her brother’s behavior because of his ignorance towards his old mother.
d) Does the son love his mother very much? How do you know that?
Answer: The son doesn’t love his mother very much because he is selfish in nature. We can know it from his intention to visit his mother after a long time to sell his house.
e) What does the mother actually need: a blanket or the warmth of her son’s love?
Answer: The mother actually needs the warmth of her son’s love.
f) What does the phrase the ‘tattered blanket’ mean? Is it only the blanket that is tattered?
Answer: The phrase the ‘tattered blanket’ means the condition of Gopi’s mother who needs the warmth of her son’s love. No, it is not only the blanket that is tattered but also the expectation of Gopi’s mother. She wants warmth of son’s love at her old age but her son is busy with his own life.
g) The son says, ‘Amma can’t remember who I am’. Do you think that he remembered his mother? Why didn’t he answer when his sister asked, ‘Do you remember your Amma?’
Answer: No, I don’t think he remembers his mother because he is selfish in nature. We can know it from his intention to visit his mother after a long time to sell his house. He didn’t answer his sister because he felt a guilt inside his heart that he rarely comes to meet his mother.
Critical thinking
a) What can be the expectations of the parents from their offspring at the old age?
Answer: Most parents are unhappy with their children’s behavior at their old age. There is complain for the lack of ‘understanding’ between parents and children because of generation gap. Children claim that their parents have high expectations from them. It is very important to tighten the bond between parents and their offspring.
Given below are things your parents expect from their offspring.
1. Spending time with them
Time is an important factor for parents-children relation. Most parents want time from their children. They expect that their children should visit them regularly if they are far from them. If they stay together, parents expect their attention and time for them.
2. physical, Emotional and financial Support
Parents expect physical, emotional and financial support from their children. Old parents need regular check up because of critical age and it requires financial support. We need to understand our parents’ emotion, feelings and desires.
3. Care like your own child
Children should treat their old parents like their own children. It’s the time to pay for what their parents did to them.
4. Taking Advice from them/ Hear What They Have to Say
We need to take advice from them whenever we are taking any important decision. It will tighten the bond between them.
b) Some children who live in a distance tend to be indifferent to the feelings of their parents. Why do you think they are like that? Discuss.
Ans: Some children who live in a distance tend to be indifferent to the feelings of their parents. They never treat their parents like their own family. They rarely visit their parents. They are like that because of their individualistic life, ignorant nature, digital gap, generation gap, modern busy life, etc.
People are very busy in 21st century. They want to earn money in their life by hook or crook. So, they have limited time after office. They have their own family. They give their leisure time to his/her family instead of giving time for their parents. Another reason is generation gap. There is a vast gap between today’s parents than past parents. Today’s parents are busy in their life and they think that their parents know nothing. As a result, they never take time to visit their old parents.
c) A mother’s love is everlasting and indispensable. Justify.
Answer: A mother’s love is everlasting and indispensable. She does selfless love to her children. She doesn’t expect anything in return. She is the first teacher for her children. She not only nurtures her children but also gives moral and cultural values. She understands her infant’s voice without speaking properly with her. She is a superhero who does everlasting love to her children. She handles her husband, job and her children properly. She changes a house into home by her craftsmanship. She bears pain inside her body for nine months for her child.
Mother teaches every step to her child to make him/her able to stand in his/her life. Every mother forgives all the mistakes of her child. She forgives as well as understands her child. So, the journey of everlasting and indispensable love of mother starts from pre-birth to maturity of her child. Mother sacrifices her every desire to fulfill the necessity and demands of her child. She has same kind feelings for her child even her child becomes old. Her child remains the same little one in her feelings. She corrects our every wrong deed to make us better every day without any desires. So, we can say that her love for children is everlasting and indispensable.

Writing
Writing a diary
What is a diary entry?
Diary Entry/Journal
A diary is a personal record of things that a person has experienced. It can also record the writer’s thoughts or feelings. Tips for writing a diary
– Write in the first person ‘I’
– Date at the top
– Organize paragraphs with topic sentences
– Give a clear sense of the writer’s personality and explain their feelings and changing emotions
– Focus on key moments or incidents in one’s world
– Provide a sense of time and sequence (use time connectives like finally, afterwards, earlier, later that day …)
– Varied punctuation – Varied sentence types
A) Suppose a child who lived in a city with his/her parents accompanied his/her father to visit an elderly grandmother in the village. The grandmother was waiting for her son to come back to the village and look after her, but her son was not willing to do so. Write a diary on behalf of the elderly grandmother describing her feeling of not living with her children and grandchildren.
2078/01/02
I love my children as well as my grand children very much. I am waiting for their arrival but they are not coming. Why didn’t they come yesterday? What’s the reason for it? Are they angry with me? I think I said something wrong when they had come last time. It may be my mistake because I scolded my son, Dipak, for not coming to visit me regularly. Another reason for not coming may be my denial for selling family property and shifting to city. I love my village and its surroundings.
Once, I visited my son’s Kathmandu city to worship the lord Pashupatinath. I stayed for 7 days there but I felt suffocated there. There was no place to greenery around the city. His neighbors’ aren’t friendly too. In my village, most of the villagers are helpful to each other. We respect and talk to each other. But the situation is different in the city. All are selfish and ignorant to each other.
People are indifferent to each other. Most of the people in the city love to live individualistic life. My son wanted to buy a house in Kathmandu to shift from his rented flat. He wanted to sell all the ancient properties of our village. But I think that it is not good idea to sell 3 acre land in village and buy anna in Kathmandu. I was sick last time when I visited Kathmandu. I can’t breathe in the polluted air of the city. I love my grandchildren very much. I wanted to take care of them in our village. I think it is the right place for my grandchildren because like in the city, there is also a boarding school in our village. Let’s hope my son will understand the importance of village life as well as his mother.
