The Lost child : Story written by Mulk Raj Anand ( Indian writer)

The story ‘The Lost child’ presents the story a small boy. The small boy gets lost in a fair. He was with his family in the fair. He was with his father and mother. He was attracted by a roundabout swing.

In this way, story the captures the pain of a separation with his family. In the same way the story also highlights love  and affection between the child and his parents. Before the separation he demanding was sweets, balloons, flowers,etc. from his parents. Actually, he was picked up by an unknown person.

The unknown person tries to fulfill all his previous demands to sooth him. But now, the child doesn’t want those things. He only wants his parents, beloved father and mother. But the child rejects all the offers by the unknown person. He wants to meet his parents.

 

Long Summary and Analysis of the Story The Lost Child by Mulk Raj Anand

The story is  set in an Indian village. It presents the time of spring season.  All the villagers are happy with the fair in their village.   All the villager are dressed in colourful dresses. They are going towards the fair. A boy is also  happy with his parents because they are taking him to the fair. The boy was attracted towards the different toys and Sweets of the fair. But his father is not happy with his demands. His mother uses different tricks to distract him from  Sweets and toys.   

The child wants to enjoy the sweets like burfi. But his parents couldn’t afford him. The child wanted to enjoy garlands of gulmohar and balloons. But he knew that he isn’t  young enough to play with balloons.  Again he is attracted by a roundabout. He looks back  to take permission from his parents to play the roundabout.

   But suddenly, he realised that his parents are not there.  He knew that he was lost. He searched here and there. But he failed to find his parents. An unknown man pretended to help him. He tried to calm him by offering him different things like burfi, balloons,etc. But the boy demands his parents, his beloved father and mother.   He wants nothing except his father and mother.  He continues his crying.

Theme of the Story The Lost Child by Mulk Raj Anand: 

The story shows the love between a child and his parents. Before he was lost in the fair, he was not interested with his father and mother. He wanted sweets and balloons,etc. But after losing his parents, he knew the importance of his parents. So, the story gives the moral lesson that we need to value our longings before it disappears. People never give importance to things that they already have.
