Summary of The Three Knights by Davies Gilbert: Class 12 Optional English

Summary of the poem: Three Knights by Davies Gilbert

This poem deals with love and death. It is a ballad, lyrical poem. It brings the theme of love and rejection. It also deals with the theme of family and relation. The poem uses spring season setting and beautiful place. Due to spring season, everything seems beautiful. Flowers are blooming and winds are blowing.

At the beginning of the poem, we see the three knights riding horses. They were coming from the west. First Knight was in white dress. The second Knight was in green dress. The third Knight was in red dress. They suddenly met a lady on their journey. They were attracted by her beauty. As a result, they fell in love with her.

They proposed her for marriage. The first knight wanted to make his delight. The second knight wanted to make her his queen. The third knight wanted to marry her. The lady asked them to take permission for her marriage. They told her that they took permission from her sister, Anne. But they hadn’t taken permission from her brother, john. On their journey, they got a chance to meet the lady’s brother, John.

The lady became wounded When the she bends to kiss her brother, John. The brother’s sharp knife pierces her heart. She becomes weak. She wants to leave the place. The knights asked her for last wishes. She wishes to gift  the strong horse to her father. She wishes to gift  a wedding dress to her mother after cleaning it properly.

She wishes to gift  bright golden ring and feathered fan to her sister. She wishes to gift  a rope to her brother, John. She expects that her brother would go to suicide point to hang himself. She wishes to gift  weeds to her brother’s wife.
