For each task: (1) Read the situation. (2) Use 40 seconds to plan your three points. (3) Record yourself. (4) Play back and check: Did you cover all points? Was it over 1 minute? Did you use at least one linking word?
TASK 1
SITUATION: You booked a hotel room for three nights. When you arrived, the room had no hot water and the Wi-Fi was not working.
YOU MUST COVER: Explain the problems with your room. Say how these problems affected your stay. Ask the hotel to give you a refund or a better room.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Problem 1 → Problem 2 → Impact → Request. Use: ‘I would like to…’ for formal requests.
TASK 2
SITUATION: Your manager has asked you to organise a small team lunch to celebrate a colleague’s promotion.
YOU MUST COVER: Suggest a restaurant and explain why you chose it. Mention a date and time that works for the team. Ask your manager to confirm the budget.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Suggestion → Reason → Date/Time → Question. Use: ‘I suggest… because…’
TASK 3
SITUATION: You saw an advertisement for a part-time English teaching assistant at a local school.
YOU MUST COVER: Say why you are interested in the position. Explain what experience or skills you have. Ask about the working hours and pay.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Interest → Experience → Questions. Keep professional tone throughout.
TASK 4
SITUATION: Your friend Priya is visiting your city for the first time next weekend.
YOU MUST COVER: Recommend two places she should visit and explain why. Suggest something local to eat. Offer to meet her and help her get around.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Place 1 + reason → Place 2 + reason → Food suggestion → Offer to help.
TASK 5
SITUATION: You are calling your internet service provider. Your internet has been slow for two weeks.
YOU MUST COVER: Describe the problem and how long it has been happening. Explain how it is affecting your work. Ask for a technician to visit or a bill reduction.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Problem description → Duration → Impact → Request. Use: ‘For the past two weeks…’
TASK 6
SITUATION: You received a work email asking if you can attend an important training session. You have a family commitment that day.
YOU MUST COVER: Explain that you cannot attend on that date and give a reason. Suggest an alternative date you are available. Ask if the training materials can be shared with you.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Polite decline + reason → Alternative offer → Resource request.
TASK 7
SITUATION: You want to recommend your city to a foreign colleague who is planning to visit Nepal.
YOU MUST COVER: Describe what your city is famous for. Mention the best time to visit and why. Give practical advice about food, transport, or accommodation.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Overview → Best time + reason → 3 practical tips. Use: ‘I recommend…’ and ‘You should…’
TASK 8
SITUATION: You work in a small office. There is a new colleague, Dana, who started last week and seems confused about the work systems.
YOU MUST COVER: Introduce yourself and explain your role. Offer to show Dana how two important systems work. Suggest a time to meet and explain where.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Introduction → Offer of help with 2 systems → Meeting suggestion.
TASK 9
SITUATION: You are applying for a small business loan to open a food stall selling traditional Nepali snacks.
YOU MUST COVER: Describe your business idea and the food you will sell. Explain how much money you need and what you will use it for. Explain why you think your business will succeed.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Business idea → Financial need + use → Evidence of success potential.
TASK 10
SITUATION: You are leaving a voice message for your doctor’s receptionist. You have been feeling unwell for five days.
YOU MUST COVER: Describe your symptoms and how long you have had them. Explain that you need an appointment as soon as possible. Ask for a call back to confirm the appointment time.
EXPERT TIP: Structure: Symptoms + duration → Urgency request → Call-back request. Keep calm and clear.
