A Matter of Husbands – Simple Summary
Characters
The play has three main people. The Earnest Young Woman is a simple wife. The Famous Actress is rich, beautiful, and very smart. The third is the husband of the young woman.
Beginning of the Story
At the start, the young wife visits the house of the actress. She feels upset, almost in tears, because she thinks her husband has stopped loving her. In her view, he no longer spends time at home, acts secretive, and does not show affection. Because of this, she believes the actress has stolen his heart. Out of fear and sadness, she begs the actress to give her husband back.
The Actress’s Clever Talk
Instead of denying the claim, the actress speaks kindly. She explains that men sometimes only pretend to love actresses. They do this to make their wives jealous and to win back their love. According to her, the husband is not truly in love with her. Rather, he is using her name as a trick to remind his wife of his value. At first the wife doubts her, but then she slowly begins to believe the story.
The Wife Feels Relieved
After hearing this explanation, the young woman feels comforted. She thanks the actress warmly and runs home, full of joy. She now thinks her husband still loves her and that their marriage is safe.
The Hidden Truth
However, the truth comes out once the wife leaves. The actress picks up a bunch of fresh flowers sent by the husband. On the card is his name, which proves that he really is in love with her. In fact, he was hiding inside the actress’s bedroom while the two women were talking. The whole story was nothing more than a clever lie to fool the wife.
The Ending
The play ends with irony. The wife goes home full of hope, but the audience knows she has been deceived. The actress shows her real skill: she can act not only on stage but also in real life. Meanwhile, the wife remains innocent and honest, which makes her easy to trick.
