Definition:
- A variety of language spoken in a specific region or by a particular social group is called dialect.
- Differs in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation from other varieties of the same language.
- Caused by geographical or social factors.
- User-based variety of language; varies by place, time, and group.
- A language may have several dialects.
Types of Dialects:
1. Geographical / Regional Dialect
- Variety differs from place to place.
- Reflects speaker’s geographical origin.
- Caused by barriers (mountains, rivers, lakes) and distance.
Example:
American English vs. British English.
Nepali in Jhapa vs. Jumla:
East: “jindagani” (life)
West (Doti): “parani” (life)
