What is active voice?
In the active voice, the subject performs an action. It means the subject becomes active.
For Example:
The tiger catches the deer. In this sentence tiger is performing an action of catching the deer.
What is passive voice?
In the passive voice, the object is focused. It is placed at the beginning of the sentence.
For Example:
The deer is caught by the tiger. In this sentence deer is placed at the beginning.
How to change active voice into passive voice. We need to follow certain structures to do it.
1.Structure Number One
We should change the position of subject and object.
For Example:
Sam eats an apple.
This sentence is in active voice. If we want to change it into passive voice, we should change the position of subject into object and object’s position into subject.
Active Voice: Sam eats an apple.
Passive Voice: An apple is eaten by Sam.
2.Structure Number Two
Changing the Verb
We should change the tense of the verb in the following way.
i. In Simple Present Tense:
S+v1/v5+O Changes into O+is/am/are+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She eats an orange.
Passive voice: An orange is eaten by her.
ii. Present Continuous Tense:
S+is/am/are+ v4+O Changes into O+is/am/are+being+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She is eating an orange.
Passive voice: An orange is being eaten by her.
iii. Present Perfect Tense:
S+has/have+ v3+O Changes into O+has/have+been+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She has eaten an orange.
Passive voice: An orange has been eaten by her.
iv. Present Perfect Continuous Tense:
S+has/have+been+v4+O
Changes into O+has/have+been+being+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She has been eating an orange.
Passive voice: An orange has been being eaten by her.
v. In Simple Past Tense:
S+v2+O Changes into O+was/were+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She ate an orange.
Passive voice: An orange was eaten by her.
vi. Past Continuous Tense:
S+was/were+ v4+O Changes into O+was/were+being+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She was eating an orange.
Passive voice: An orange was being eaten by her.
vii. Past Perfect Tense:
S+had+ v3+O Changes into O+had+been+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She had eaten an orange.
Passive voice: An orange had been eaten by her.
viii. Past Perfect Continuous Tense:
S+had+been+v4+O
Changes into O+had+been+being+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She had been eating an orange.
Passive voice: An orange had been being eaten by her.
ix. In Simple Future Tense:
S+will/shall+v1+O Changes into O+ will/shall +be+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She will eat an orange.
Passive voice: An orange will be eaten by her.
x. Future Continuous Tense:
S+will/shall+be+v4+ O Changes into O+will/shall+be+being+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She will be eating an orange.
Passive voice: An orange will be being eaten by her.
xi. Future Perfect Tense:
S+will+have+ v3+O Changes into O+will+have+been+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She will have eaten an orange.
Passive voice: An orange will have been eaten by her.
xii. Future Perfect Continuous Tense:
S+will+ have+been+v4+O
Changes into O+will+have+been+being+v3+S
Example: Active Voice: She will have been eating an orange.
